According to Business Monitor International (BMI), Malaysia’s armed forces still rely on defense imports; major import sources are countries with long-standing defense cooperation ties, such as the UK and France. However, as the country seeks to expand its domestic defense industry, the government will increasingly favor any contracts that can offer lucrative offsets and technology transfer, creating opportunities for new players to enter the domestic market.
Malaysia’s defense strategy has mainly focused on strengthening naval and air power capabilities as a result of growing security threats from tensions over territorial disputes in the South China Sea. The air force and navy have therefore received increasing shares of the defense budget, creating market opportunities for companies operating in the naval and aerospace segments of the industry.
