Spanish renewable energy company Acciona Energía announced the development of the one-gigawatt (GW) Herries Range wind farm to double its generation capacity at its MacIntyre Precinct in Queensland, Australia, according to the company’s statement on November 28.

With the wind farm worth around A$2bn ($1.34bn), MacIntyre Precinct represents A$4bn overall and will reach 2GW of generation capacity in total.

“Acciona Energía is one of the world’s leading developers of renewable energy projects and this additional A$2bn commitment is a strong endorsement that Queensland is a renewable energy superpower,” Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said in the statement.

The company believes that MacIntyre Precinct is the largest wind project in Australia. Herries Range will be built alongside the 923-megawatt (MW) MacIntyre wind farm, owned by Acciona (70%) and local renewable energy company Ark Energy (30%), and the government-owned energy company CleanCo’s proposed 100MW Karara wind farm.

MacIntyre wind precinct is already under construction in the Southern Queensland Renewable Energy Zone, and expected to be operational by 2024. Once it is operational, Acciona believes that it will supply clean electricity to 1.4 million households annually.
